Differences Between 'Lead' & 'Hard Cast' Bullets

Hard cast bullets can be formulated of numerous alloy mixes (antimony, silver, tin, etc) containing some lead, but the alloys make the bullet much harder than pure lead. Pure lead has a Brinell hardness # of about 4. Most hard cast bullets will have a Brinell hardness # of 11 to 30 and as such are several times harder than lead.

Jun 14, 2013· Leave the solder out and it's at 9.9 BHN. Solder can be found cheap at yard sales if you don't have any. I'd try it w/out the solder first and see how fillout is. Chances are it will be just fine. Whatever you do, don't buy pure Antimony. It's a pita to get it to blend w/ the lead. The super hard melts right in like any other piece of lead.

Dec 06, 2008· to see what I could come up with for bullet casting. Best mix seems to be 50% WW + 30% Linotype + 5% 67/33 Solder + 15% Pure Lead. This results in an alloy with 0.13% Arsenic, 5.60% Antimony, 4.78% Tin and 89.49% Lead based on the published analysis of WW and Linotype. Haven't tried it at the range yet but it casts well and is pretty hard.
